Juta Shoes by Results: Sustainable Innovation Award 2017

Juta Shoes is a social enterprise handcrafting comfortable, stylish and versatile espadrilles from reclaimed, environmentally friendly materials, supporting marginalised women into work. We use leather from local factory offcuts, vegan materials sourced from reclaimed garments and textiles, and soles made from low-carbon-footprint jute. We work with women in East London who face barriers to accessing work, provide training and supported, flexible, creative work making shoes and leading Shoemaking Workshops, above the London Living Wage. We provide opportunities in all aspects of the business, a supportive community and employability skills training to allow them to achieve their career goals. Continued...
2016: Kickstarter campaign: doubled target. 2016-2017: 3 pop-up shops. 2017: 5 wholesale retailers, including a collection designed by our makers. Trained 29 women, with 4 regularly working for us. Sold over 250 shoes, saved over 80 kilos of industrial leather waste from landfill. Run 6 Shoemaking Workshops. Pitched: Filanthropy and Beyond Good Business raising £1000 and £800 Next: workshop at Anthropologie, teaching employability skills at a Housing Association, training a new cohort of makers.
