Bio-D is the UK’s leading independent producer of eco-friendly cleaning products. All Bio-D products are made in Hull, UK, from sustainable, naturally-derived raw materials and are free from synthetic chemicals, preservatives, enzymes and synthetic perfumes. Bio-D formed in 1989, after founder Michael Barwell sought alternatives to standard home cleaning products – which often contained the same harmful chemicals as industrial cleaners that require the use of safety equipment. Bio-D is approved by Cruelty Free International and the Vegan Society, and is accredited by Allergy UK for its fragrance free products.

Story and ethos

Green’s Furniture was founded in 1998, five years after we inherited a neglected water mill. The mill, where our workshop is based, is now fully restored and a beautiful place to work. We opened a gallery and tea room in 2016 showing local artisan crafts.

Our furniture is designed and made for each customer. Starting with drawings, we develop every piece so it’s a personal reflection. We’re specialists in wood carving, including lettering, bringing a traditional skill into the 21st century. We have been training apprentice joiners for the last two years and have recently started doing courses for weekend visitors to enjoy.

At Greens we take sustainability seriously by using FSC accredited timber in all our products. Our lightweight packing cases can be composted or recycled. Powered by renewable energy, our mill and gallery space are well insulated, low-carbon buildings. We host our local primary school every year for a summer children’s picnic and we put on an exhibition of their art in the gallery.

We're planning to extend our workshop so we can restore furniture. We are also developing new office spaces in the currently disused top floor of the mill. This will enable us to accommodate more local, sustainable businesses. We aim for Green’s Furniture and the mill to be carbon negative by 2030, starting with retrofitting the new spaces. It’s exciting to have a project that will bring added comfort, lower our carbon footprint and increase local jobs all within a beautiful heritage building that’s now open to everyone. We’d love you to visit!

Refilling locally

I have been using the same plastic Bio-D washing up and laundry liquid bottles for over three years, I refill at my local independent store in East Dulwich. I think the product is fantastic and I love that it’s so simple to save plastic too.
