Caroline Brogden is a contemporary jeweller known for her innovative use of Surfite—a material created from layers of excess resin left over from surfboard production. Inspired by the coast, she transforms this waste material into vibrant, colourful jewellery. Her work challenges traditional notions of preciousness by elevating discarded materials into wearable art. Combining hand-carving techniques with silver settings, her designs celebrate sustainability, craftsmanship, and individuality. Sustainability remains the key theme throughout her latest jewellery collection combined with her passion for the local coastline of Anglesey. She has spent a number of years developing partnerships with British surfboard shapers to create a circular economy by purchasing their waste and working on ways to reduce the environmental impact of the raw material. Her jewellery collection aims to not only highlight the beauty in slow, thoughtful craftmanship but also act as a reminder of the beauty and potential of sustainable design. Through her work she hopes to inspire a shift in how we view waste and underscore the need for mindful consumption.

Story and ethos

Caroline is a self-taught jeweller working from her home studio on the Isle of Anglesey. She started her business in 2019 and has an experimental, material-led approach to her work; she seeks to create conversation around the ideas of sustainability and circular design. Her work predominantly focuses on hand-carving waste and surplus resin produced during the manufacture of custom Surfboards. These carved shapes are then combined with recycled precious metals to provide both structure and form.

Caroline creates bold, contemporary jewellery using Surfite, a by-product of surfboard manufacturing, and recycled precious metals. The collection includes, necklaces, earrings and rings. The Surfite is all sourced from British board shapers and is purchased as part of a circular economy. Her work is deeply inspired by her daily walks along the coast of Anglesey as she aims to evoke the wearers memories of days by the sea whilst also promoting sustainability by transforming waste into beautiful, wearable art. As a self-taught maker Caroline has adapted traditional lapidary techniques to carve and shape the waste material by hand. Once the initial shape is carved the Surfite has to go through several rounds of sanding and polishing to help refine the shape before she can add her custom precious metal details. Her designs often feature wave-like forms and fluid lines with a coastal aesthetic; reinforcing her connection to sustainability and the ocean.

I am very much on the start of my journey with creating a more sustainable and green business. I have established sourcing and buying my waste Surfite as part of a circular economy direct with British board shapers. Solar panels provide the large majority of the electricity used whilst grey and harvested water is used to feed the cooling tubs. Packaging material is made from recycled wood pulp. All product lifestyle shots are taken on location at local beaches and these images are taken in conjunction with cleaning an area of the beach. Materials are then taken whom sorted and recycled where possible.

Focus remains on sustainability and the potential to incorporate other waste and surplus materials into my work.

We’re delighted to be featuring such beautiful work, on Blue Patch with an imaginative use of a waste material transformed and given a second life.
