Our handcrafted stoneware has been shaped by generations of craftsmen and moulded by the changes in the way we live and the fashions of the time. You can follow our journey through over 200 years of history and meet some of our iconic designs and the people who bought them to life in the kiln.
We've been making stoneware in Derbyshire since 1809. Since our beginning, we have only used locally sourced clay and secret glaze recipes to handcraft our designs. With every piece passing through 20 pairs of hands before it is finished, we ensure attention to detail and quality in all our production processes and final product. It takes a wide team of talented people to develop and craft our products. The combination of extraordinary designers and craftspeople, along with over 200 years of experience in making ceramics in our Derbyshire pottery, creates our beautiful, versatile and durable collections. The best kept secrets have always been our glazes and the likes of Halo and Azure really come to life when they're fired in the kiln. With tiny particles of glaze, exacting temperatures and a little specialist know-how we can create pottery works of art.
We are proudly the first UK tableware manufacturer to claim zero process waste to landfill which helps to save 600 tonnes of CO2 emissions every year. Conscious of the impact of waste on the natural environment and keen to minimise this, we continue to recycle our moulds, clay waste and glazes and are reducing single-use plastics in our packaging by recycling our cardboard boxes and reusing as a shredded alternative. In addition, we employ an Environmental Officer to ensure that Denby is constantly looking at ways to improve our sustainable approach. In our efforts to live and work more sustainably, we follow the 3 Rs: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.
To date, in 2019, our waste to landfill is less than 1% (target set for the EU is less than 10% by 2030).
We use clay from our doorstep which enables minimal transportation of the main raw material.
Our energy consumption is industry leading and at least 10% lower than targets set.
We are continually installing energy saving lighting systems and optimising the gas usage in our kilns.
We return to pasture and landscape the areas of land we take the clay from.
We now use shredded waste from our recycled cardboard to create box-fill packing instead of plastic air-fill.
We make all our moulds from plaster of Paris and these are recycled to make plasterboard. Every year we recycle 300 tonnes of plaster of Paris moulds which is enough to fully plaster 50 new homes.
Every year we recycle over 100,000 litres of glaze during the glazing process.
Denby has its own water treatment plant and each year we purify and return to the water cycle 28 million litres of process water.
We recycle all our food waste produced in Bourne’s Restaurant and The Loft as well as the staff canteen to be turned into energy.
Denby gift boxing is recyclable and a high proportion of Denby is available without packaging.
Committed to reducing our impact on the earth and making more conscious choices, we are always evolving and are constantly looking at additional ways in which we can improve.
Today we continue to go from strength to strength, crafting timeless collections that exude English heritage and seeking our new trends to create modern ones. We've masterfully updated some of our vintage patterns in our inspirational Heritage range and the stunning Natural Canvas collection. From Friday night to Sunday lunch, Denby brings you the best of both culinary worlds. Practical every day tableware and stylish sets to make any occasion special.
