Jarr Market is a refill zero-waste store based in the heart of Herne Hill, south London. We refill your containers, subtracting the weight of the container first, with dried foods, from rice to raisins, oats to herbs and spices and our very popular granola. We have olive oil and oat milk, fresh-pressed peanut butter, lovely soaps and wellbeing products. You can refill eco-friendly laundry liquid and household cleaning liquids and powders. Our mission is to cut plastic waste from the weekly shop.
Dried beans, grains, herbs, spices, vegan chocolate, cereals, pasta, coffee and tea, condiments, peanut butter, bake goods, olive oil and oat milk. Locally made face masks, toiletries and cleaning products, refill containers
Jarr Market was founded by Jess in 2019, from an overwhelming concern about the issue of plastic pollution. The mission of the shop is to empower customers to reduce their waste by bringing their own containers and we believe that individual action can add up to a significant change in the way we shop. Over the last few years Jarr has almost doubled the amount of products it offers. Through 2020 and the covid struggle Jarr has had to adapt to serving customers at the door, instead of self-serve, and we've introduced a delivery service for those self-isolating.
Jarr is open six days a week and we sell a range of unpackaged food, toiletries and cleaning products, along with other eco-friendly products. We allow customers to bring in their own containers, weigh them, fill them up and we weigh them again to determine the weight of the product without the container. We also do deliveries via bike within a radius of 2 miles of the shop. Our team consists of four employees working flexible part-time schedules.
Jarr aims to work with local, sustainable, organic and independent suppliers wherever possible, prioritising no packaging or recyclable packaging for bulk products and we work hard with suppliers to set up circular supply systems. For example, our cleaning products are delivered via electric van in 20L tubs which are then returned when empty to be washed and refilled, creating a waste-less system. We have similar systems for various of our products including our olive oil, rapeseed oil, granola and beauty products. Jarr is run on 100% renewable energy and works with First Mile to properly recycle any waste we have. We're also a living wage provider and aim to provide a healthy and flexible working place for our employees.
After-covid we plan on starting to have small events such as workshops, pop-ups and talks at the shop. We're also hoping to be able to open more shops around London some day!
We are regulars at Jarr market. It opened up just when we needed it, both because everyone is more environmentally aware and because they have provided such a vital service during the pandemic. They even set up bike deliveries!
