I founded Love Heartwood in 2017. Inspired by the woodlands of Berkshire and my love of woodturning I wanted to offer an alternative to our wasteful, disposable culture. I believe in the ability of handmade, natural products to imbue our possessions with real value and create a link for us to each other and our environment.
I am very proud to be the winner of the UK's national Rural Business Awards 2022 for Best Sustainable Business and Runner Up for Best Craft/Artisan Business.
My wood comes from a couple of sources. The green, or fresh, timber comes from sustainably managed local sources. Recycled wood from other woodworker’s waste streams is also used.
Native British grown timber is used exclusively. Firstly, because imported timber may come from illegal logging and exotic hardwoods which have travelled halfway round the world create a large carbon footprint. Secondly because using local timber creates a connection with local woodlands.
Waste is minimised by using off cuts from larger items to make the smaller ones. Even the sawdust created is recycled into a local school's food waste composter.
When sourcing materials checks are made to ensure they are produced ethically and responsibly. As much as possible I support other small businesses by choosing them as suppliers. The paints and finishes used are plant based and completely natural. This means they’re healthy and contain no VOC’s.
Every Love HeartWood product is vegan friendly. None of the materials or finishes contain animal derivatives.
There is absolutely no plastic in or on any of Love HeartWood’s products, finishes or packaging.
Renewable energy sources power the small workshop and the business's website server.
As a toy maker and parent safety is of paramount importance to me. So all the toys have been fully tested and bear the UKCA and CE marks to prove it.
Love Heartwood has pledged to plant 600 trees in the UK between 2022-23 with the help of Green the UK. Previously over 1000 tree plantings have been funded with the support of the charity Tree Sisters.
I’m committed to ethical business practices and believe in the living wage. My goal is to make Love HeartWood the sustainable brand it can be. Currently I am working on tracking my carbon footprint and have pledged to be carbon neutral by 2023.
