Sourcing ethical furniture

Spring is on the way, the days are getting brighter and it might be time to plan a room makeover or two. Sourcing ethical furniture can be difficult, as stores are full of furniture made cheaply in overseas factories. Our directory of ethical businesses is a useful resource when you are planning to redecorate – these are just a few of the businesses you will find there.

Peter Lanyon Furniture – Peter is an award winning furniture maker who uses home grown British hardwoods and locally coppiced green wood. Peter also runs courses so you can learn to make your own furniture in his workshop in Devon. https://www.peterlanyonfurniture.co.uk/

Katie Walker Furniture – Katie is famous for her contemporary rocking chairs that are works of art in themselves, but she also produces tables, chairs, benches and screens – some of which can be seen at the New Art Centre in Roche Court Sculpture Park. https://www.katiewalkerfurniture.com/

Angus Ross Furniture – Angus is based in Aberfeldy, Perthshire and is a specialist in steambending oak into interesting shapes. He uses locally felled trees and manages a woodland near his workshop responsibly. https://www.angusross.co.uk/

Heliconia Furniture – Chris is a designer-maker of fine wooden furniture. His London Plane Project uses wood from plane trees from which he makes a small collection of craft furniture. He also has a range of furniture called Arts & Crafts House. https://www.heliconia-furniture.co.uk/

Plyable Design – Tom makes a range of clever contemporary furniture items from plywood: bookcases, stools and storage units. He has developed storage solutions for commercial projects, like a bike rack for the borrow a bike scheme. https://plyable.co.uk/

John Eadon Furniture – John handcrafts furniture in his workshop in Warwickshire. His Avon lounge chair and Oasis coffee table have been featured on our stand at Decorex. He creates custom made fitted and freestanding furniture for homes, an example of which was a Warhammer games table. https://johneadon.co.uk/

Shape Furniture – Jonathan crafts his furniture from local hardwood, carefully sourced from sustainably managed forests in the Lake District. He makes desks, tables, seating and storage and the distinctive Fika seats use Danish cord to create a comfortable natural curve. https://shape.furniture/

Blackbird Bespoke – Maggie and Louis’s team of blacksmiths and metalworkers make contemporary metal furniture at the workshop in Kent. Their distinctive style includes some standout table designs: mosaic, origami and disqus. They also make seating, mirrors and lighting.  https://blackbird-bespoke.com/

Slow Sofa – a Yorkshire-based manufacturer of handmade sofas and chairs that are built for life from carefully considered materials with no foam or hidden chemicals. The sofas are traditionally crafted with solid timber frames and wool, cotton and natural latex upholstery. https://slowsofa.co.uk/

Vanessa Arbuthnott Fabrics – Vanessa designs fabrics using the area around her home in the Cotswolds as inspiration. She can arrange for the fabrics to be made up into chairs, sofas, footstools and headboards by trusted local craftspeople. https://www.vanessaarbuthnott.co.uk/

The Natural Bed Company – beautiful, handmade wooden beds and bedroom furniture. Each piece is made to order in the workshop in Sheffield, so that timber is not wasted. They are specialists in contemporary four poster, low, Japanese, Indian, Scandinavian and futon beds. And they have a range of classic and upholstered beds. https://www.naturalbedcompany.co.uk/

Buezeval Furniture – Mandie Buezeval makes simple functional furniture, but design-led. The Sidney kitchen cabinet plays with the different tones of ebonized cherry, walnut and London plane. It is finished with Danish oil. Folding and fold-away features are designed into storage, seating and tables. https://beuzevalfurniture.com/
