The Ocean Collection: Innovative, Sustainable Interior Lighting

Soho Lighting launched the Ocean Collection in 2022. The collection is an exquisite range of lighting using recycled fishing nets and plastics, brought to life through 3D printing.

Sustainability is central to The Soho Lighting Co.’s design processes and business practices. From the choice of materials and manufacturing methods to their consideration of a product’s lifecycle and circularity, Soho Lighting is committed to making a positive impact on people and planet.

They actively seek and invest in new efficiencies across production and packaging, exploring recycling and upcycling possibilities as well as new, sustainable materials.

One example of this is their plan to remove all plastics from their packaging. They already ship their sockets and switches in 100% plastic free packaging and are 75% of the way to doing the same for all their product packaging.

Soho Lighting was born when the founders were unable to find lighting for their renovation projects. They were refurbishing characterful historic buildings in London and wanted to find unique lighting that would fit in with a period home but be suitable for modern living.

They continue to design lights from London but the manufacture of their lighting products is done in Cornwall. The products include bulbs, lighting, sockets and switches. There are eleven collections of lighting, and many more for sockets and switches.

The British brand’s innovative Ocean Collection works towards ridding the world’s oceans of harmful plastics whilst delivering beautiful, high-end interior lighting.

The collection launched in 2022 as part of Selfridges’ ‘Let’s Change’ campaign, an initiative in their #ProjectEarth strategy. The growing collection of striking 3D-printed designs created in partnership with Fishy Filaments™ is made from recycled plastics and disused fishing nets that have been salvaged from the sea.

Each light in the Ocean Collection is printed to order. Ripple, Shallow, Scallop, Fluted and Droplet designs come with sea green, emerald green, clear and white shades. There is a selection of bulb holder finishes to choose from.

The result? Stylish, contemporary lighting that is unlike any other on the market. When lit, the delicate material resembles linen or glass and lends a gentle glow to the surrounding space.

Lee Lovett, co-Founder of Soho Lighting explains: “We are immensely proud of our Ocean Collection. This new, sustainable concept of repurposing old fishing nets and other recycled plastic materials has enabled us to create beautiful pendants whilst helping to protect our oceans and sea life.”

10% of profits from Ocean Collection orders goes to Surfers Against Sewage who actively campaign to clean up UK waterways and oceans. For Soho Lighting, the Ocean Collection is the perfect pairing of high end design and corporate responsibility.
